iOS 5.1 Untethered Jailbreak Ready

Infamous hacker Pod2g announced on Twitter that his iPhone 4 is now running an untethered jailbreak. The hack is known to be based on a record number of exploits.

“Heya! My iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 is now untethered,” reads the latest tweet from Pod2g, hacker extraordinaire.

The coding guru recently opened up a poll for the iOS install base to vote whether or not to release the jailbreak when ready, or wait for iOS 6, in order to save exploits. In the meantime, fellow hacker P0sixNinja (Joshua Hill) noted on Twitter that the next iOS jailbreak would feature an epic number of exploits.

Should Pod2g cede to release his jailbreak, with the poll ending in favor of the release for iOS 5.1, Apple would get a huge leg up in the cat-and-mouse game between them and the hackers.

Pod2g and his fellow software geniuses would have to find new holes to exploit when iOS 6 ships.

The biggest problem, however, is that iOS is getting airtight, making it more and more difficult to jailbreak every time Apple releases an update.

106,473 (64%) people voted in favor of releasing the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1. Over 55,000 (or roughly 33%) voted against it, stressing that iOS 6 is going to be a challenge, and that Pod2g should not burn his exploits right now.

3,735 people (2%) said “Where's my bottle of beer?,” which translates into “undecided.”

Pod2g hasn’t made any promises regarding the outcome of his poll. In other words, there’s no guarantee he’ll release the jailbreak for iOS 5.1. For all we know, the guy simply wanted to know everyone’s opinion.

Still, hackers doing charity work like Pod2g usually like to keep their followers happy. That, and they love a challenge – which iOS 6 will bring, sure enough.
