Parted Magic 6.3 has been released. It's only been a couple of weeks from the previous update, so the changelog is not long. There are several new packages though and more CPU options. Some smaller fixes and updates have been introduced as well. Clonezilla 1.2.8-46 is now included.
"This release fixes a few obscure typos and bugs in some of our scripts. Pburn and Pfilesearch have been added for testing. There are no menu entires yet, so run 'pburn' from the command line," Patrick Verner announced.
The two tools have been borrowed from the Puppy Linux family of distros. As such, they are not fully integrated or working 100 percent as the can in Parted Magic.
Until they can be made to run completely as intended, a menu item will not be added, though, hopefully, this will happen before the next release, Parted Magic 6.4
"The main reason for this release was to add more kernel CPU options. Parted Magic now comes in i486, i686, and x86_64. The only testing I've done with x86_64 was on my i7 machine," Verner explained.
"I've successfully chrooted into Slackware64 1337 and ran some command line programs. The i686 CPU is set to PIII, so if you are running a PII, use the i486 version instead," he added.
Until now, Parted Magic only came in the generic and universal i486 version. This ensured compatibility with virtually any x86 hardware still running today.
However, this approach meant that Parted Magic could not take advantage of what more modern processors add. And, with 64-architectures now supported by most software out there, it was time for a 64-bit only version as well.
