THQ Also Licenses NVIDIA PhysX for Its Worldwide Studios

Joins EA and 2K Games

NVIDIA's PhysX technology is enjoying increasing popularity, as the company has announced today that THQ, a global leading developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software, has selected the aforementioned technology to be used by its studios worldwide.

With this development, THQ joins EA and 2K Games, which have recently announced that they have also licensed PhysX to be used in their studios throughout the world. The technology enables game developers to develop titles with more realistic features, which, of course, will offer gaming enthusiasts a comparatively more true to life video experience.

“The NVIDIA PhysX technology delivers astonishing physics effects and will help us develop the most competitive and innovative products in the marketplace,” said Roy Tessler, THQ’s senior vice president, Production and Worldwide Studios. “With support for both the CPU and the GPU, PhysX technology allows us the creative freedom to design compelling environments and deliver truly immersive gaming experiences.”

PhysX is a technology developed by Ageia, a company that was acquired by NVIDIA. It is meant to handle the physics in a gaming application, thus bringing a more realistic feel to titles developed for a variety of platforms, including PC, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Thanks to the architecture of NVIDIA's graphics processing units, physics can be handled by the GeForce GPU, for up to 10 to 20 times more visual complexity over what was possible on traditional platforms.

“Physical interactions are increasingly important to bringing realism to interactive game play and we are thrilled that THQ has selected PhysX as a development platform for their interactive entertainment titles,” said Ujesh Desai, vice president of GeForce Desktop Business at NVIDIA.

The fact that THQ has decided to license NVIDIA's PhysX for its worldwide studios to use literally translates into that, in the near future, releases from the gaming developer will make the most of said technology.
