The drive features 32MB buffer, 7200rpm, and a SATA II interface
Western Digital is expected to soon launch its new 2TB hard disk drive, which seems to have already surfaced on some retail sites. The Western Digital CaviarGreen WD20EADS – 2TB is listed at a Czech retailer for as much as €270, or $370. The features list of the HDD includes a Serial ATA II interface, 7200 rpm, 32MB buffer size, and a 3.5-inch form factor.
2TB of storage is a lot of space, and users will be able to enjoy it to store their files. Besides, the fresh CaviarGreen WD20EADS HDD has been packed with a lot of new technologies like IntelliPower, IntelliSeek or IntelliPark, all meant to make it more power efficient and to provide an easy way to manage the product's temperature. The hard disk comes as a suitable choice for media centers, external boxes or media servers.
According to the specifications found on the reseller's site, the drive features a Serial ATA 3GB / s interface, as well as improved shock resistance (can support acceleration to 250 G in the Off and 65 G on the fly). The Western Digital CaviarGreen WD20EADS 2TB HDD includes, besides enhanced reliability, technologies meant to reduce the risk of data loss and leveraged security features. It supports a series of utilities like Data Lifeguard Tools, which ensure easy installation or error checking.
On the downside, although the drive is listed as sporting a 2TB storage capacity, it can actually store only 1860 MB of data, as the manufacturer considers a kilobyte being only 1000 bytes. Moreover, as mentioned above, compared to a 1.5TB Barracuda, which sells for €122 in the E.U., the price of the CaviarGreen seems a little too high. Considering the fact that the drive hasn't been released yet, the price tag is expected to lower as soon as it is out.
