Image comment: Rhythmbox music player in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

I have to admit that Rhythmbox is my favorite music player in Ubuntu and I've replaced Banshee with it in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot).

Banshee has a lot of problems if you ask me. From the fact that it depends on Mono, and continuing with the time it takes to start and its overall stability issues.

Rhythmbox is light, it starts very fast, and it "just works". What do you think about Rhythmbox or Banshee? Which one should be the default music player in Ubuntu? Please post comments below! http://news.softpedia.com/news/Do-You-Want-Rhythmbox-or-Banshee-in-Ubuntu-12-04-233449.shtml

  1. It seems to me that Rhythmbox would make the most sense as the default preinstalled music player.

  2. Banshee for sure, unless they give Rhythmbox an equalizer.

I'm a linux amateur. I got Ubuntu because I'm so sick of Windows but can't afford a Mac. The thing I care about most is audio quality.

Listen to your favorite song in Banshee and Rhythmbox back to back on a laptop. They'll sound the same. But now go to the equalizer in Banshee (forgot which drop-down menu, probably either "options" or "view"). Select the "laptop speaker/headphones" option. Now repeat the process. You will hear the difference.

And that difference is profound. So please, whatever you pick, make sure it has an equalizer!

  3. I think Banshee is heading in the right direction. They have what a good media player needs. They just need to focus on fixing bugs (which they are doing) and speeding up startup time.
Rhythmbox hasn't move a bit since I last installed it on 9.10, so I wouldn't understand this decision.

  4. Rhythmbox of course.
As a philosophy, I always try to support the default apps in ubuntu.
So I got rid of Rhythmbox to get used to Banshee and wanted to discover it.
But it's been very difficult for me.
I have a medium sized library (shared via DAAP) of about 5'000 songs.
I get crashes all the time with Banshee.
    My songs are showed twice.
I used drag & drop playlist in Rhythmbox and the one in Banshee is really not that easy.
    Rhythmbox, Rhythmbox, Rhythmbox !

  5. Rhythmbox is fast and stable, but it's a long way behind in terms of usability and features. It does also struggle with huge collections, as does Banshee.

I use Banshee, but do have to put up with the odd bug and crash.
